Who is Peanut, the squirrel and how is he related to the 2024 US presidential elections?
Peanut, affectionately called P'nut by his legions of fans, was an eastern gray squirrel rescued in 2017 by Mark Longo after its mother was tragically killed in a car accident in New York City.
With no shelter to take him in, Longo bottle-fed Peanut for eight months before deciding it was time to release him into the wild.
But Peanut, clearly not ready for freedom, returned to Longo's porch the very next day, minus half of his tail, signalling the end of his wild adventures.
Despite New York's laws against keeping squirrels as pets, Longo took Peanut in and cared for him in Connecticut, even working to certify him as an educational animal.
But the authorities had other plans, seizing and ultimately euthanising Peanut.
Before his untimely end, Longo had turned Peanut into an Instagram sensation, amassing over 534,000 followers by October 2024.
As the US headed into its crucial presidential election, Peanut's death became a political flashpoint.
Supporters of Donald Trump rallied around the squirrel, with Musk and Trump Jr. both taking to social media to criticise the government's handling of the situation.
The government should not be allowed to barge into your house and kill your pet! That¡¯s messed up.

Even if it is illegal to have a pet squirrel (which it shouldn¡¯t be), why kill PNut instead of simply releasing him into the forest!? https://t.co/2m9Gi5QpUT
And after the election results, as Trump celebrated a victory and Kamala Harris prepared to concede, an unexpected moment of magic occurred.
A squirrel was spotted running near the edge of the stage in the background before Harris was to make her statement, prompting many to declare it the "spirit of Peanut" making its final appearance.
