'Avoid Alcohol And Coffee': Flight Attendant Reveals Hacks To Sleep On A Plane

Sleeping on a flight is not an easy task and not many have been able to crack the code. People try different methods - from noise-cancelling headsets to travel pillows to pills, just to get a good sleep. But does any of it work?

To be honest, not really. It is quite impossible until you read these tips from flight attendants who have mastered the skill.

Bella Sapsworth, who used to be a flight attendant for Emirates, explained how to catch a good sleep on long-haul flights. However, her advice will do you no favours with your co-passengers.

"Recline your seat. You pay for a reclining seat - so use it!," she told Metro.

While it may not be the best suggestion, reclining your chair fully will give you the best possible position for sleeping in economy.

Another top tip from Bella is to do with what you¡¯re putting in your body.

What you eat and drink while you travel can have a big impact on how you feel, and how well you can sleep. You might be in a holiday mode and consuming alcohol might seem tempting to ¡®knock yourself out¡¯, but Bella advises against this.

"Drink lots of water. And avoid alcohol and coffee, because they dehydrate you," she says.

She also has thoughts about the plane accessories that you need to have in your hand luggage. "Bring an eye-mask, a blanket and slipper socks (although change into shoes when you use the bathroom) ¨C the air-con can be chilly."

Does it make sense to move if there are spare seats? Bella says so.

"After take off, if the flight isn¡¯t full and you see a full row free (in the cabin you paid for ¨C you cant waltz up to business if you paid for economy), then go and sit there and stretch out," she told Metro.

Now, these hacks are all well and good ¨C but most people will agree that there is a limit to how well you can possibly sleep while in economy class.

Reaching your destination fully rested, whether you indulge in a short and sweet nap or a full rack en route always beats lurking around an airport tired and crabby. Grab your 40 winks in flight, and you¡¯ll be a happier traveller.
