The song "Lovebomber Baby" has gone massively viral on social media, the singer, composer and lyricist of the song is enjoying her internet fame at the moment. We sat down with her for a tell-all about her song and life. Here's how it went.
What is the inspiration behind the song?
Porwal, always wanted to write an original song and had a knack for singing since childhood, admittedly, since she was 2 or 3 years old. Upon asking what prompted her to write this song, she says, "I had an experience very recently. I met somebody. I really liked that person and he lovebombed me. Even I didn't know what love bombing was within two or three days he was into me. I was like everything is going too fast. After some days he started ghosting me."
Porwal was left feeling "traumatized by this real-life experience" and decided to write about it, in the simplest vocabulary, for everyone to decipher and relate to it easily.
She further adds, "I researched that a lot of girls are going through this (love-bombing) and even boys. They shower you with a lot of praise and then immediately pull back. This is a manipulator technique used by narcissists and emotional abusers. It's a form of mental and emotional abuse. So, then I thought I should write about it so you can say a heartbreak actually, led me to write a song. It brought out the artist in me."
Did you take inspiration from Taylor Swift?
People on the internet compared Porwal to Swift, who is known to turn her heartbreaks into pop sensations. When asked if she took inspiration from Blank Space's singer, she said, "I understand what's happening on the internet. People are like - you are Taylor Swift. I love Taylor Swift but I had no one in mind when I wrote the song. I just wanted to write a song about my experience and bring awareness because I took a lot of time to recover from this. I didn't want people to go through the same thing I went through. I really appreciate her (Taylor Swift) but people tend to connect artists, but nothing of that sort happened."
She also added, "Whatever was my experience. I just put it into a piece of paper. The song is easy to understand and I wanted it to reach more people, as you see the lyrics are not as complicated as any layman would understand it."
What do you do in life other than singing?
"I have been trying to become a singer. I've been singing since childhood but the thing is that you don't get an opportunity easily. So I've done certain covers on my YouTube channel already. They are on Spotify and then I did some title tracks for an animation show. So I've got some opportunities but they were not very lucrative and that didn't push me into mainstream singing. I used to sing a lot of Lata Mangeshkar ji, Asha Bhosle ji, and I was frankly not into English much, I wanted this song to be about love-bombing so I skipped Hindi for now."
Porwal also did some small roles and cameos in TV shows. She also has a web series coming up this year.
How much time did it take to write this song?
"It didn't take me much time. I wrote it quite quickly in a couple of days. It took me much more time to execute the song. I'm a new artist and getting the costumes and getting a videographer, took much more time. I'm the composer and lyricist of the song, I also directed and choreographed it. So, it's basically a one-man thing. It took me a lot of time. I had a videographer, an assistant DOP and a makeup artist with me, apart from that the direction, and styling I did on my own. If you see the song credits, you will come to know what I have done it all."
Porwal also funded the song herself.
What is your family background?
"My life is quite different now, it was panned out to be completely different, but I'm really thankful. This is what I wanted when I was a child. I always wanted to be an artist but then I did Computer Engineering from Mumbai University. Then I did an entrepreneurship management course. Then I acquired five International certifications from Ooty. My father is a retired director General from the Border Roads Organisation, my mother is a homemaker and a sister, who runs her own business. My father also received Vishisht Seva Medal from the President of India, so he has been an idol."
Porwal is a Mewari from Rajasthan but grew up all around the country as a result of her family's defence background. She currently resides in Mumbai, while her family is settled in Pune.
People are saying you are a marketing genius, how did you promote the song?
"If you have a dream, it's not easy to get it. You can't just say that I'll sing you for my dream. You have to put on multiple hats. Even for promoting the song. I am completely after it. People ask who's a marketing genius and it's not any marketing genius at all. You make the song, and you promote it. That's it. There's no marketing genius in this. You have to pay people to hire PR for you, to have a team but I'm doing everything single-handedly. So I'm not a marketing genius. I just made a song. I saw some clips. I'm looking good. I'm singing well. I just used Instagram. For artists we use social media for promotion only, I don't put out much about my personal life. Artists use social media for their careers."
How did you deal with trolls?
"Of course, people are trolling me very badly, but if you're in the public eye, then you have to have thick skin. So I'm fine with the trolling. It's okay because I can't explain to each person what my vision was, I mean if you like the song you can listen to it. I mean even right now if you open Instagram a lot of trolling is happening. People are like this is the Shakira of India and¡just very pathetic stuff, but it's okay. But people are also encouraging me. So I'm looking at the encouragement rather than the trolls."
What advice do you have for people who are getting love-bombed?
"I am a very practical person, I am not much into dating. I just avoid relationships as much as possible. I actually do not prefer dating sites and I am not a fan of them. But if you find somebody and if you get close organically, I think that is a better way. I'm quite traditional in that sense. I might look like an extrovert but I'm an introvert, frankly! That's why I like to be in my zone and write songs."
"If you have a person with you where you both can grow together in life not just personally but professionally. You need a partner for everything so I will be up for dating if somebody's helping me in my career. Spiritual growth should happen because we have very limited time on Earth. It's a spiritual journey according to me, I believe in spirituality. Girls and boys just be very choosy before choosing your partners because a partner can ruin your life or they can help you. So it's better to be single than to be with the wrong person."
Are there more songs coming soon?
"I'm gonna make more songs, but it'll take me quite some time to write again. I'll make a nice song and come back. I'm not in a hurry."
