Gita Gopinath Becomes 1st Woman & 2nd Indian To Feature On IMF¡¯s ¡®Wall Of Former Chief Economists¡¯
Gopinath had served as the first female chief economist of the Washington-based global lender for three years.
India-born Gita Gopinath became the second Indian and the first woman to feature on the IMF's 'wall of former chief economists' (International Monetary Fund).
Raghuram Rajan served as the IMF's Chief Economist and Director of Research from 2003 to 2006 and was the first Indian to earn the honor.
Gopinath joined the IMF in October 2018 as Chief Economist before being promoted to First Deputy Managing Director in December 2021.

Who is Gita Gopinath?
For three years, Gopinath led the worldwide lender with headquarters in Washington as its first female chief economist.
The research by Gopinath has been included in numerous prestigious economics journals.
She served as the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University before being named the IMF's chief economist.
Before joining the faculty of Harvard University in 2005, she was an assistant professor of economics at the University of Chicago¡¯s Booth School of Business.
Gopinath was chosen as a fellow of the Econometric Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2018. She was recognized as one of the Top Global Thinkers of 2019 by Foreign Policy.
She won the University of Washington's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2017. The World Economic Forum selected her as a Young Global Leader in 2011, and the International Monetary Fund named her one of the top 25 economists under 45 in 2014. Gita received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman in 2019 from the Indian President.
