After months of struggle and over 300 applications, Dhruv Loya, an engineer of Indian origin, finally landed his dream job at Tesla. Now, he's sharing his journey and tips to help others in the challenging job market, especially international students facing similar hurdles.
Tesla, the flagship company of the world's richest person, Elon Musk, has sparked a remarkable trend in electric vehicles (EVs), solidifying its status as a leader in the market. For many, securing a position at Tesla feels like a dream realised. Recently, an engineer of Indian origin achieved this dream after submitting over 300 applications. Now, he's sharing his inspiring journey to help others who dare to pursue their ambitions.
Meet Dhruv Loya, an engineer of Indian origin who had it all¡ªthree internships, a solid GPA, and a rich involvement in extracurricular activities.
Despite these qualifications, he faced a tough reality: he was unemployed for five months. "I never imagined I would be in a position where I¡¯d be unemployed for five months," Loya reflects.
During that time, he lost his lease and health insurance, all while feeling the pressure of his visa status, knowing he could be forced to leave the U.S. at any moment.
Dhruv found himself moving between friends' apartments, sleeping on air mattresses, and saving every dollar he could to get by.
After navigating the gruelling job search process, he finally landed a job, and now he has valuable advice for others in similar situations.
"I know the job market is very tough, especially for international students. My advice to anyone facing this struggle is to treat applying to jobs as your 9-5, but make sure to use your evenings and weekends to unwind and do things you enjoy," he advises.
"I understand how emotionally draining this process can be," says Loya.
Dhruv also shared some resources that helped him throughout his journey, which could be useful for others as well:
- Hunter.io for effective cold emailing
- LinkedIn, Indeed, Handshake, and Jobright.ai for job searches
- ChatGPT+ to help tailor resumes and cover letters
He wraps up with an encouraging message: "Just keep manifesting, stay positive, and believe that things will fall into place!"
How did people respond?
In the comments, people highlighted the struggle of having to work so hard just to secure a job.
One wrote, "No one should have to work this hard to get a job. Getting a job should not be a full time job."
Another said along the same vein, "This is totally unacceptable. Our economy is in a very bad way these days. Shouldn't be a forced thing to have to do. It isn't a skills issue. It's economic."
"The struggles are real as International Students really," added another. 'It's crazy how we're so driven and determined. Just goes to show how you deserve it even more."
