After graduating from IIT Roorkee, Sharma started his career with Indian Railways, where he worked as a Divisional Mechanical Engineer for four years before being promoted to Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer in 1994.
He spent over 11 years with the organisation before deciding to move on.
In 2002, he pursued further studies and enrolled in a one-year MS program in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, completing it in 2003.
He then joined Seagate Technology as a Staff Mechanical Engineer, where he was promoted to Senior Mechanical Engineer in 2008.
During his five years at Seagate, he also earned an MS in Management of Technology from the University of Minnesota.
In 2013, Sharma took a leap into the space industry by joining SpaceX as a Dynamics Engineer.
At SpaceX, he led structural dynamics efforts and collaborated with teams working on aerodynamics, propulsion, GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control), and thermal engineering.
He also played a key role in the first-stage booster recovery and reusability initiatives, from the Falcon 9 flight F9-005 to F9-0059.
In 2018, he transitioned to Matternet Inc., a company specialising in commercial drone delivery systems, where he initially led vehicle engineering and later headed the technology division for over two years.
Sharma made his way back to SpaceX in 2022, taking on the role of Principal Engineer for Starship Dynamics. He is currently based in Hawthorne, California.
