Internet shocked as man arrested for 'haha' comment on IAS officer's post: 'Babus are divine gift, our duty to praise'
An Assam man landed in legal trouble for reacting with a haha emoji to a Facebook comment about an IAS officer¡¯s makeup. After a complaint was filed, he had to travel 273 km to court¡ªproving once again that in India, laughing at the wrong joke can be no joke at all!

Looks like laughing at the wrong joke can land you in serious trouble! A man from Assam¡¯s Dhekiajuli is now facing a police case simply for reacting with a laughing emoji to a Facebook comment. The comment in question? A remark about Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka not wearing makeup. Well how dare you talk about a DC¡¯s look online!
What exactly happened
Amit Chakraborty landed in legal trouble simply for reacting with a laughing emoji to a Facebook comment.
The comment, posted by Naresh Barua on a photo of Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka, read, "No makeup today, ma'am?"
Ms. Deka took offense and filed a complaint at a Kokrajhar police station, naming Chakraborty, Barua, and a third man, Abdul Subur Choudhary.
As evidence, screenshots of the conversation were submitted to the court. In one of her responses, Ms. Deka warned Mr. Choudhary about cyberstalking under Section 354D of the IPC, stating she would file a complaint.
In another, she accused Mr. Chakraborty of making a derogatory and sexually colored remark under Section 354A, saying she would take legal action.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Chakraborty said, "It's from 2023, I don't even remember now. I just reacted to a Facebook post... and for laughing, today I have to take bail. I don't know that Varnali Deka is an IAS officer or a Deputy Commissioner."
How the internet reacted: 'Babus are a divine gift to us'
A dermatologist who goes by the name The Skin Doctor on X and often shares his views on politics and current affairs recently took to the platform to highlight this unusual case.
Be careful before commenting anything other than praise under an IAS/IPS officer¡¯s photo.

In Assam, a man reacted with a "haha" emoji to a Facebook comment saying, "Ma'am, no makeup today," under an IAS's photo on her public facebook profile. As a result, he had to travel 273 km¡
He cautioned, "Be careful before commenting anything other than praise under an IAS/IPS officer's photo."
Describing the incident, he explained that a man in Assam reacted with a "haha" emoji to a Facebook comment that read, "'Ma'am, no makeup today,' under an IAS officer's publicly shared photo. As a result, the officer filed a case against him for cyberstalking and making sexually derogatory comments, forcing him to travel 273 km to appear in court."
With a touch of sarcasm, he concluded, "Please remember, Babus are a divine gift to us. They toil endlessly to keep the country running. So, if they manage to squeeze in a moment from their packed schedules to post a photo, it becomes our constitutional duty to shower them with praises and inspire them to work even harder. They must feel that their noble sacrifices for humble beings like us aren't going to waste."
As one comment on the post mentioned, "This whole babu culture needs an overhaul. Too many people are falsely implicated and many are harassed based on positions. Tragic we live with these sadistic show off even today."
So, next time you see a government official's post, remember¡ªreact wisely. A thumbs-up might be safe, but a haha? That could be a legal adventure you didn't sign up for!
