In A First, Three Jamia Alumni Have Been Invited To Judge The Oscars
In order to have a more inclusive and diverse representation in terms of race, gender and ethnicity the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS) has invited more than 800 film professionals across 68 countries to become members. The Academy is known for its annual Academy Awards, what we commonly known as The Oscars.

The Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) alumni who have been nominated in the list of documentary filmmakers include Nishtha Jain, Shirley Abraham and Amit Madhesiya. All of them are post graduates from the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (AJKMCRC).

Nishtha Jain
Some examples of Nishtha Jain¡¯s filmography are the City of Photos (2004), Lakshmi and Me (2007), At my Doorstep (2009), Family Album (2011) and Gulabi Gang (2012). The last one won the National Award for the Best film on Social Issues in 2014.
Apart from that she has received 25 international and national film awards.

Shirley Abraham and Amit Madhesiya
Shirley Abraham and Amit Madhesiya have collaborated on a series of internationally acclaimed projects. Cinema Travelers their debut feature-length documentary premiered as an official selection at Cannes Film festival and received a standing ovation.The film has won 19 awards.
As an independent filmmaker, I know the value of the legitimacy of my voice, of a place at the table.

Amit Madhesiya's photo series `Night Screening of Traveling Cinema in India¡¯ received the World Press Photo Award in 2011. Abraham and Madhesiya have won a number of prestigious awards and their work is internationally acclaimed.
It is a matter of pride for the country that these Jamia alumni have been selected to be judges at The Oscars.
