Joe Rogan is infamous for saying statements on his podcast that offend others from time to time but this time, he really touched a sensitive nerve with people.
On an episode where he was in conversation with comedian Bridget Phetasy, Rogan talked about paternity leave.
The duo was discussing how US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is currently on leave after adopting twins with his husband. However, Rogan expressed his unnecessary opinion and said that the US is experiencing shipping delays because of port congestion in California.
After this, Phetasy brought up a picture of Buttigieg and his husband with their newborns in what seemed like a hospital bed and pointed out that it was weird because neither of them gave birth.
Rogan asked why men need to take time off work after having a baby.
"Isn't that supposed to be for the person who gave birth?" Rogan asked on his show.
"Do men take paternity leave? This idea that both parents should get maternity and paternity leave at the same time is a little weird."
To this, Phetasy said that European countries have paternity leave legislation to make sure that both parents get time with their children. Rogan added, "That's great. You wanna live in Germany? Because in America you gotta work...we're not in Europe, and for America, this is a new concept. When someone in government, who is a man, who didn't give birth, and there is two of them, and they both are off work and they get free money or what happens?"
The comedian said that paternity and maternity leave is not as simple as it sounds. She said, "It's not just about the baby, the mom needs support in the aftermath of giving birth. It's not just to bond with the kid. It feels like we don't have the same social cohesion and family structures that we used to have."
Not backing down, Rogan "explained' that this is why men are favoured by employers because they don't give birth and hence, don't need to take time off."
Needless to say, Rogan's statements infuriated a lot of people who were enraged about his lack of understanding of why paternity leave is important.
.@joerogan bc I didn't have paternity leave, I missed more of the beginning of my son's life than I was there for.

My daughter was born Jan 2020, so due to Covid, I was able to spend so much time with her.
This should be the norm, not something only attainable through a pandemic. https://t.co/fObbzQTOr2

Presently, paternity leave is mandated in only five American states - New York, California, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Washington state, and Washington DC.
However, even then, 45 per cent of US businesses offer paid paternity leave, 55 per cent have paid maternity leave and 35 per cent have paid family leave, according to the Society for Human Resource Management.
