Kangana Ranaut draws parallels between Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni drama and Hema Committee report: 'Worrying and shameful'
Kangana Ranaut is the latest celebrity to come out in support of Blake Lively after the latter's lawsuit against her co-star Justin Baldoni. Citing Hema Committee report, the Bollywood actress highlighted how women who refuse to compromise suffer across film industries.
From Hollywood and Bollywood to Tollywood and Mollywood, women's oppression in the film industry has been a pressing issue for decades. The recent Blake Lively lawsuit against Justin Baldoni highlights how even women as resourceful as the Gossip Girl alum are not safe from workplace harassment. Kangana Ranaut, a vocal advocate of women's rights known for expressing her unabashed opinions, has now reacted to Lively's lawsuit, drawing parallels with the Hema Committee report, which unraveled dark secrets of the Malayalam film industry earlier this year.
Blake Lively's lawsuit against Justin Baldoni
Blake Lively on Saturday filed a lawsuit against her It Ends with Us co-star Justin Baldoni, accusing him of sexual harassment and mounting a campaign to "destroy" her reputation.
In her 10-claim complaint, The Age of Adaline actress alleged that Justin showed her provocative images and videos of women, openly discussed his past addiction with porn, and made distasteful remarks about her weight and her deceased father.
Accusing him of causing her and her family severe 'mental distress,' the actress also claimed that Jane the Virgin star orchestrated a well-curated social media campaign against her following their differences in marketing of their movie.
Since Blake's lawsuit, Justin has been dropped by his talent agency, his podcast co-host Liz Plank has quit, and his women's rights ally honor has been revoked. However, his lawyer has vehemently denied the allegations, citing that the texts shared in Lively's lawsuit lack critical context.
About the Hema Committee report
The Hema Committee report dived into the problems faced by women in the Malayalam-language film industry, also known as Mollywood, revealing the ill-treatment of female force in one of India's most celebrated film hubs. The 290-page report included findings of the three-member panel, comprising Justice Hema, actress Shraddha, and former IAS officer VB Vatsalakumari.
While the report was submitted to the government in 2019, it was made public only in August this year, nearly five years of delay and multiple legal challenges by members of the film industry.
It highlighted how the industry ¡°is controlled by a group of male actors, producers, distributors, exhibitors, and directors who have gained enormous fame and wealth," who are also among the predators.
Kangana draws parallels between Blake Lively's lawsuit and the Hema Committee report
Kangana Ranaut is the latest celebrity to rally around Blake Lively as she outlined how women in the film industry are maligned and their careers are destroyed if they refuse to compromise. She took to her Instagram stories to reshare an E! News post featuring an image of Blake and her sister, Robyn Lively, which also included a quote from Robin urging everyone to read the NYT report that 'calls out those behind the ruthless and nefarious smear campaign that aimed to take down my sister.'
Kangana wrote, "Even in Hollywood, women who refuse to compromise are maligned, and their careers are destroyed. It's not just Bollywood; a similar report called the Hema Committee had come out about the Malayalam film industry; it is worrying and shameful."
Blake has also found support in Amber Heard, her The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-stars America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel, and Colleen Hoover.
