The Significance of Karwa Chauth
Karwa Chauth holds immense importance for married Hindu women, as they observe a strict fast, known as 'Nirjala Vrat,' where they do not consume any food or water throughout the day. The fast is observed for the longevity and good health of their husbands. Women pray to Chauth Mata (also known as Gauri Mata) for blessings, and the fast is broken after the moonrise.
The festival is not just about fasting but also involves women dressing up in traditional attire, applying mehendi, and adorning themselves with jewellery and makeup. In the evening, women offer water to the moon from the Karwa (clay pot) and break their fast only after seeing the moon.

How to Break the Karwa Chauth Fast
To ensure the Karwa Chauth fast is broken correctly, here¡¯s a simple step-by-step guide:
Prepare the Thali
The thali (plate) should contain a diya (oil lamp), a glass of water, a few traditional snacks like mathris, and some flowers.
Wait for the Moon
Once the moon rises, prepare yourself for the ritual by wearing traditional clothes. Women usually look at the moon through a sieve before starting the next steps.
Offer Water to the Moon
Using the lota (water vessel) from the thali, pour water in the direction of the moon as an offering. Alongside, women also offer mathris or other small food items to the moon.
Look at Your Husband Through the Sieve
After offering water to the moon, women look at their husbands through the sieve, symbolising their love and dedication.
Break the Fast
The husband then helps his wife break the fast by giving her the first sip of water and a piece of food, which ends the day¡¯s fast.
Seek Blessings
After breaking the fast, it is customary to seek blessings from the elders in the family.
Enjoy Dinner
The day ends with a lovely meal shared by the family after the long hours of fasting.
Happy Karwa Chauth 2024 to all!!
