'Lockdown' Named 'Word Of The Year' In 2020 By Collins Dictionary
Collins Dictionary defines lockdown as 'the imposition of stringent restrictions on travel, social interaction, and access to public spaces'.
With coronavirus coming into our lives, a few words became a part of our daily diction. From social distancing to quarantine, we have a new way of talking. However, if there is one word that has been used the most, it is lockdown.
Now, the word lockdown, has been named as the Collins Word of the Year 2020.
Collins Dictionary defines lockdown as 'the imposition of stringent restrictions on travel, social interaction, and access to public spaces'.

Lexicographers said that the word became synonymous with the experience of people around the world amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"It is a unifying experience for billions of people across the world, who have had collectively to play their part in combating the spread of COVID-19," publishers Harper Collins said.
The word "lockdown" registered more than a quarter of a million usages in 2020 as compared to the 4,000 last year.
Other than that, six of the 10 words of the year 2020 are related to the pandemic.
'Coronavirus', 'social distancing', 'self-isolate' and 'furlough' as well as 'lockdown' and 'key worker' are part of the of 10-word list of the year.
"2020 has been dominated by the global pandemic," Helen Newstead, a language consultant at Collins, said.
"Lockdown has affected the way we work, study, shop, and socialise. With many countries entering a second lockdown, it is not a word of the year to celebrate but it is, perhaps, one that sums up the year for most of the world."
None of us ever thought we would be using this word in this capacity but now that's all anyone can talk about. Since some countries are going back in the lockdown phase, it's being used all over again.
