Imagine being subjected to constant name-calling and mockery for looking a certain way. If you know a someone from the northeast, chances are you know how difficult it gets for them to maintain a normal life away from their state, all thanks to rampant racism.
Due to the Coronavirus spreading across the globe like wildfire, people in India have started spewing hate on people from the Northeast just because of their looks. The reason? The novel pandemic originated in China and they look 'Chinese'.
In order to make people aware of these hate-spewing incidents, some Northeastern students released a video where they share their ordeal of being at the receiving end of racism just because of their looks.
The students live in a small village called Chunni Kalan in Punjab and have now gone viral on social media. In the video, a girl explains how earlier, people would call them names like "Nepali, Chinki, Chinese" and now they have resorted to calling them "coronavirus". Another boy in the video explains patiently that just because they look a little different than the rest of the country that does not mean they are from China. He further explains that they have nothing to do with the virus or our neighbouring country.
The girl in the video also explains how certain people from the Northeast have been told to vacate their rented houses because of the blatant racism that people are subjecting them to. She tries to educate everyone and says that India is a multi-cultural country with all sorts of people.
They also request their viewers to have a better understanding of the Indian map and educate themselves about the states in the Northeast. The now-viral video has garnered a lot of responses from people who have either supported them or shared a similar ordeal in the comments section.
It is extremely shameful that during a global crisis like the present one, people have the time and audacity to be racist towards others. Instead, people should educate themselves of how the virus came into being and where it actually came from which is not the Northeastern part of our country.
