Over 5,000 People Killed In Road Accidents Caused By Potholes In 2018-20: Transport Ministry
As per Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) data, the total number of road accident deaths due to potholes in 2018, 2019, and 2020 stood at 2,015, 2,140, and 1,471, respectively.
The most recent official statistics show that between 2018 and 2020, road accidents caused by potholes led to 5,626 deaths.

Because navigating such roads requires skill, additional caution, and vigilance, they often have features like abrupt bends, potholes, and steep hills that make roads accident-prone.

Recently, road transport and highway minister Nitin Gadkari said the ministry had formulated a multi-pronged strategy to address the issue of road safety based on education, engineering (both of roads and vehicles), enforcement, and emergency care.

The minister stated that several factors contribute to road accidents, including vehicle design, dangerous driving, cell phone usage, driving while drunk or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, overloaded vehicles, vehicle conditions, and bad lighting conditions.

Other causes, he had noted, were running red signals, overtaking, neglect of municipal authorities, the weather, driver error, driving on the wrong side of the road, deficiency in road maintenance, defects in car maintenance, cycling error, and pedestrian error.
High priority is being given to the identification and rectification of black spots (accident-prone spots) on national highways, Mr. Gadkari said, adding that road safety has been made an integral part of road design at the planning stage.

In April this year, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari raised concern over road accidents and said that India tops the world in terms of the number of people killed in road accidents.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Gadkari said that based on the latest issue of the World Road Statistics (WRS) 2018, brought out by the International Road Federation, Geneva, India ranks number 3 in the number of accidents.
And India ranks number 1 per the number of people killed and 3 per the number of people injured in road accidents, Gadkari added.
Furthermore, Parliament was informed that the percentage of fatalities involving road users aged 18 to 45 stood at 69.80 percent for 2020.
