Are street vendors exempt from GST and income tax?
In India, street vendors are generally not required to pay Goods and Services Tax (GST) or income tax due to their small-scale operations.
GST registration is mandatory only for businesses with an annual turnover exceeding Rs 40 lakhs.
Similarly, income tax obligations apply to individuals whose annual income surpasses the taxable limit, which is Rs 2.5 lakhs for individuals below 60 years of age.
Given that many street vendors operate on modest earnings, they typically fall below these thresholds and are thus exempt from these taxes.
Further, in case they get paid via cash, then too they can avoid the tax net.
However, now street vendors have come to notice because of increasing online payments which customers prefer nowadays.
