Pets are out, robots are in: AI is the new emotional support for Gen Z and millennials, reveals study
A recent survey reveals that while pets like dogs and even chickens provide emotional support, 11% of millennials and 10% of Gen Z are turning to artificial intelligence for comfort, with 18% finding AI more effective than traditional pets.
Pets offer incredible emotional support. Had a rough day at work or a disagreement with your partner? A warm welcome home from a furry friend can work wonders for your mood. However, a new trend is emerging among Gen Z and millennials: they're increasingly turning to non-living sources for emotional support. You guessed it¡ªartificial intelligence! Let's face it, AI is becoming a ubiquitous presence in our lives.
Researchers at First Saturday Lime, specialists in eco-friendly insect repellents, recently conducted a fascinating survey involving 1,000 individuals from various generations, from Zoomers to Boomers.
Their findings revealed that 11% of millennials and 10% of Gen Z participants prefer turning to artificial intelligence for comfort instead of traditional pets like dogs, birds, fish, and rabbits.
The authors of the study noted, as NY Post quotes, "Interestingly, 18% of these AI users found their virtual companions more effective than traditional [emotional support animals]."
For example, advancements in AI are on track to offer significant help to new mothers dealing with postpartum depression. Experts from the University of Texas recently announced plans to create a chatbot designed to assist mothers by incorporating insights from diverse research on their needs.
However, when it comes to emotional support animals, dogs reign supreme. Data indicates that Gen Z is 133% more likely to select a dog over a cat to alleviate stress and anxiety.
Interestingly, chickens have also carved out a niche among younger Americans. Researchers noted, "Chickens have gained a fan base among younger Americans, with 19% of millennials and 18% of Gen Z opting for them as emotional support animals."
But beware, dogs and chickens¡ªAI is replacing your jobs as well!
