A New York police officer went way beyond the call of duty to rescue a dog that had fallen into the icy water of a partially frozen lake.
Officer Jon Smith of the Lewiston Police Department stepped into action when he saw a dog that had wandered out onto Bond Lake and fell through the ice. The canine was trapped in the water about 50 yards from shore, Newsweek reported.
"Well folks he¡¯s done it again. After just receiving a department award for pulling a woman from a burning house, this time it was a 4-legged friend," the Lewiston Police Department said. "Without hesitation he removed his equipment and went in after him, bringing him safely back to land and reuniting him with his owner."
The dog owner later sent a letter to the police, in which he commended Smith for his actions.
Walking across that ice was is extremely dangerous but the courageous officer didn't think twice about rescuing the dog. It didn't look like that dog was getting out of the water himself, and the ice-cold temperatures probably made it that less likely. Kudos to Officer Smith for saving the dog's life.
Last month, two Spanish police officers swam through a frozen lake to save a dog trapped in the icy water. The officers from Spain's Guardia Civil in the city of Jaca took off their uniforms and stripped down to their waists before wading through the frozen body of water in order to rescue a dog, Reuters reported.

The dog had been stuck in the reservoir in Canfranc, in Aragon, eastern Spain, for hours. One of the officers can be seen in the video footage swimming through the ice chunks with a wooden stick while the other officer can be seen wading in and helping him out.
He and a colleague then managed to free up a path for the dog to swim back to safety before all three climbed out onto the shoreline.
