Prithvi Shaw lost focus due to fame and money, says former Delhi Capitals coach: 'It's not easy to teach this generation'
Prithvi Shaw unsold status at the IPL 2025 auction has raised questions about his career. Former Delhi Capitals coach Pravin Amre believes Shaw's focus was derailed by early fame and money, highlighting how sudden wealth and distractions led to his downfall.
After young Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction, the cricket world has been buzzing with speculation over what led to his fall from grace. Former Delhi Capitals coach Pravin Amre recently weighed in on the 25-year-old Shaw¡¯s struggles, revealing how the player¡¯s focus was derailed by the distractions of money and glamour.
"It's not easy to teach certain things to this generation," said former Delhi Capitals coach Pravin Amre when talking about why Prithvi Shaw was not picked up by any team at the IPL 2025 auction.
Amre, who worked closely with Shaw during their time together at DC, pointed to the challenges of guiding players in today¡¯s era, especially when they are suddenly thrust into the spotlight at a young age.
He emphasised that Shaw's early fortune, which included a lucrative IPL contract by the time he was just 23, might have led to a loss of focus.
"Thanks to being retained by DC, Prithvi must have earned ?30-40 crore by the time he was 23. Will even an IIM graduate get that type of money? When you earn so much at such a young age, you tend to lose focus. It's important that you know how to manage money, have good friends and prioritise cricket," Amre pointed out to TOI in an interview.
Shaw's rapid rise in 2018, when he scored a stunning century on his Test debut and was part of the Indian squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is still remembered as one of Indian cricket¡¯s most promising breakthroughs. However, things soon took a downturn.
Shaw¡¯s career faced a major setback when an ankle injury kept him out of the 2018/19 series, and then he was banned by the BCCI in early 2020 for testing positive for a banned substance, terbutaline.
Amre revealed that he tried to steer Shaw in the right direction by using the example of former cricketer Vinod Kambli, whose career faltered due to similar issues.
"Three years back, I gave him Vinod Kambli's example. I've seen Kambli's downfall from close quarters. It¡¯s not easy to teach certain things to this generation," Amre remarked.
"It's so disappointing to see that a talent like him is going in the reverse direction," Amre shared.
