The Protesting Farmer Who Shut Off A Water Cannon & Became The Face Of The Protest

Farmers from Haryana and Punjab protesting against Modi government's farm laws continue to be challenged with water cannons and detention by police as they march towards Delhi.

Undeterred, the farmers continue onward, and in the process several photos and videos have emerged that have gone on to become viral and stand out as symbols of a voice that needs to be heard.

One such video doing the rounds online reportedly shows Navdeep Singh, young farmer from Ambala, who skipped past the lathis, jumped on a police vehicle and shut down a water cannon.

Many reports point out that the incident took place near Kurukshetra. A Quint report explain, Navdeep, a graduate, is one of the many farmers from 250 villages protesting.

Talking to Punjabi Lok channel he admitted, "I was a studious child, never did these kind of things like climbing and jumping. But the bravery shown by protesters gave my courage."

When asked about the now-iconic moment, he said: "I climbed from a tractor trolley on to the truck and reached the tap. I turned it off, but a policeman had also climbed (on to the truck) chasing me. But by that time, my brother had brought his tractor near and I jumped on it.¡±

Calling the cops who hit him on his legs with lathis 'sons of farmers too,' he expressed no anger toward them.

The incident is said to have occurred at a time when authorities had reportedly blocked the Amritsar-Delhi highway so no tractor-trolleys could pass through.

Reports also point out that the protests may not end here, as claimed by farm leaders and trade union leaders.
