The Tribute in Light art project returned on Wednesday to mark the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, visible within a 60-mile radius of Lower Manhattan. The twin beams symbolize resilience and honour those lost. 9/11 Memorial & Museum President Beth Hillman emphasized the importance of passing on the story to younger generations.
The legendary Tribute in Light returned on Wednesday night to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The art project was visible within a 60-mile radius of Lower Manhattan from dusk on Wednesday, September 11 until daybreak the following day.
How did New York City remember 9/11?
The twin light beams, designed to mimic the original Twin Towers, have become a common emblem of New Yorkers' fortitude in the aftermath of the attacks.
"With more than 100 million Americans born since 9/11 or too young to remember that tragic day, it's imperative that we inspire a new generation by sharing the unity and resilience of our collective response. Tribute in Light's twin beams reach high into the night sky to remind everyone of who and what we lost -and found --23 years ago," said Beth Hillman, 9/11 Memorial & Museum President and CEO.
The Tribute in Light was first unveiled six months after 9/11, in March 2002, as rescue, recovery, and relief efforts at Ground Zero proceeded.
