Local Residents Erect Sign In Karnataka's Kodagu District Stating 'Google Is Wrong'
Locals in Karnataka's Kodagu district recently installed a handmade signboard warning travelers of Google's navigation error.
Google Maps, which relies on satellite imagery, is the world's most popular digital map service, and millions of users use it every day to get to their destination.
However, Google Maps can be misleading at times due to obsolete data, GPS and communication issues, and technical faults. There have been various instances where Google Maps has misled travellers.
What did locals put up in Karnataka's Kodagu district?
Locals in Karnataka's Kodagu district recently installed a handmade signboard warning travelers of Google's navigation error. The amusing signboard encourages users to ignore Google's directions and take a different path to reach the Club Mahindra resort.
Kodagu Connect's X account uploaded an image of the signboard. ''Google is incorrect. "This road does not lead to Club Mahindra," states the sign. The signboard was installed by local people who were fed up with lost travelers asking for directions after being misled by Google Maps.
How did people on the internet react?
Many individuals recounted their personal stories of being deceived by Google Maps. One user stated, ''Google local guides like me (volunteers) could have changed the incorrect listing. But Google has an admin crew that enjoys rejecting edits at random. So, have someone from Google fly down and fix it. "Until then, let people curse them like this."
Others stated that they cannot rely on Google Maps, particularly when visiting hill stations and mountainous locations.
Another user added, ''Once we climb the mountains, Google always gets it wrong. I recall how we traveled from Kukke Subramanya to Madikeri via sullia. Google forced us to take a random right, and after traveling for 80+ kilometers, we realized we were on the incorrect track and were directed to the correct way by a local.
