The Sun Doesn't Set For Over 4 Months In Norway - All You Need To Know
Norway, situated in the Arctic Circle, is called the Land of the Midnight Sun, where from May to late July, the sun actually never sets.
There is a place in Europe where the sun does not set at all for four months straight. The place also known as the land of the midnight sun is the country of Norway.
The midnight sun appears for four months in Svalbard in Norway
According to the VisitNorway website, this phenomenon occurs between 20 April and 22 August each year and is marked by festivals and activities. This entire phenomenon occurs in the areas of the Arctic Circle, and the region with the longest period of the midnight sun is Svalbard.
There is apparently a lot to do in this area which is halfway between the North Pole and Norway. According to the website, there are activities that seem way too different at midnight. They recommend going on a whale safari or exploring the wilderness. Other than that, one can also go for midnight golfing, cycling, river paddling, or sea kayaking ¨C or maybe just find a quiet spot to fish.
"You¡¯ll find the Svalbard Islands where the polar bears reside. Here, you can really talk about an endless day ¨C the sun patrols the sky in almost uniform circles all summer. From the modern town Longyearbyen, which offers a wide range of cultural activities, restaurants, and bars, you can venture into the wild (always with an armed guide) to explore the islands¡¯ Arctic nature, rich wildlife, and old mining towns," the official tourism board says.
Other than that, the website has also instructed as to how one should take pictures during the midnight sun period. They recommended that one should not clutter the image. "Since colours are more vivid in the midnight sun, it is a good idea to keep images simple, concentrating on two or three colours at the most to avoid a messy image."
The board adds: "Foreground images can be used to frame subjects in the mid and deep field, creating a better sense of three-dimensionality." If one wants a really killer picture then try to 'maximise the impact of the light sky on a landscape, compose your picture in the viewfinder by keeping the horizon a third of a way from the bottom; this will help your camera to expose properly.'
While Svalbard has the midnight sun for the longest period of time, there are other places in Norway where one can find the midnight sun as well. Those other areas are, Finnmark, Troms, Lofoten and Vester?len, Helgeland, Bod? and Salten.
