Swiggy Ends Up Paying Customer Rs 5,000 For Not Delivering Rs 187 Ice Cream

Often are we dissatisfied with our online orders, be it clothes or food. But what happens if your order never arrives. In similar light, a Bengaluru consumer court has ordered Swiggy, the popular food delivery app, to pay over Rs 5,000 in compensation to an unhappy client who missed out on a specific 'Nutty death by chocolate ice-cream' because of a Swiggy delivery partner.

In January 2023, the dissatisfied customer placed an order for the delightful dish for a mere Rs 187. A delivery agent apparently picked up the order from the ice cream shop but then vanished into the night, leaving the consumer in a state of dessert-less misery.

Despite the fact that the order was marked as 'delivered' on the Swiggy app, the ice cream remained as elusive as a Yeti in the Himalayas.

What did the customer do?

The consumer initially attempted to resolve the issue by contacting the customer care team and asking a refund on the order. When that request was denied, the client took matters into his own hands and sought justice in the hallowed corridors of a consumer court.

According to an Instagram photo published by @bengaluruhub__, the court's decision was as quick as a melting scoop on a hot summer day. The court ordered Swiggy to compensate the customer Rs 5,000.

Out of the allocated amount, Rs 3,000 was set aside as compensation for the customer's hardship, with an extra Rs 2,000 set aside to cover legal fees. Swiggy's activities were condemned by the court as a 'deficiency of service' and a 'unfair trade practice'.

How did Swiggy react to the issue initially?

The piece also referenced Swiggy's attempt to wash its hands, claiming it was simply a middleman caught in the crossfire between customers and businesses.

Citing the Information Technology Act's protective cloak, the corporation claimed innocence, arguing that it couldn't verify the order's delivery status despite its app's bold assertion.
