More often than not, only girls are taught household chores because it is considered their responsibility to manage all the household work. Not only does this deepen the gender gap, it also deprives young boys of important survival skills. To change this, a college in Spain has introduced ¡®Home Economics¡¯ as a compulsory subject.
The subject is introduced to teach ironing, cooking, cleaning, bed making and washing clothes to boys. The institute - Colegia Montecastelo - is located in Vigo, a town near North Western Spain. In addition to the members of the teaching staff, fathers of some of the students are also volunteering to help teach the kids.

The classes were initially introduced to teach how to cook, however deeming the positive response they have been extended to teach washing and ironing clothes and keeping the house neat and clean.
¡°When we talk about cooking to school children this is seen to be quite normal, but regarding the other housework chores, some people were not very convinced,¡± the school authorities said. There are many other institutions in the country which have started following suit.
