Toilets In Hotels Free For Public Use In Guwahati, Heavy Penalty For Those Who Deny Service

At long last, women and children won¡¯t have to hunt for bathrooms during a long journey or in busy markets in Guwahati.

In Guwahati, toilets in every hotel and restaurant, even those of five stars, can now be used by anyone, even non-customers, for free. In the past, to use restaurant loos, one would have to order something and in some cases even pay for the service.

That's not the case this time around; anyone can walk into to a restaurant, regardless of its rating, and relieve themselves.

Local reports state that the GMC Commissioner, Debeshwar Malakar mentioned that the new norms are levied on 5-star hotels in the city and people can have free access to the restrooms without ordering food or payments for the same.

The provision for the same has already been included in the Municipality license.

North East Today quoted Debeshwar Malakar saying that Guwahati city did not have enough public toilets and under smart city projects 33 bio-toilets have been installed but that is not enough.

The GMC Commissioner also said that if any hotel, restaurant or shopping mall authority refuses to provide the service, then penalties would be levied.

This moves comes after South Delhi Municipal Corporation's initiative taken two years ago, when it issued directions to all hotels, restaurants and eateries in its jurisdiction to make their washrooms accessible to the public.

In this move anyone with Rs 5 in hand would be allowed to access washrooms in even five-star hotels of South Delhi.
