Especially after the pandemic hit and people were forced into their homes with limited contact with the outside world, the internet became an indispensable resource for everyone around the world. However, for most people in India, the transition from offline to online was relatively simple.

A Twitter user, Caleb Friesen, took to the platform and shared that, according to his calculations, he could have a much better cost of living in India than in some of the major cities in Canada. He shares that the cost of 25 GB of data a month in Canada can get you up to 150 GB of data in India and more.

Over this huge gap in data prices, Caleb estimates that he could easily afford "unlimited 100 Mbps broadband, a 4K Netflix subscription, a Swedish massage, and a Rs. 600 meal on Swiggy/Zomato, in India" for the price of 25 GB of data per month in Canada. He continued, "And people still ask me why I don't move back."

He demonstrated how much the cost of living differs between the two countries. He writes, "Bell postpaid mobile plan - 25 GB/month $85 Rs. 5,188," while data in India is much cheaper, "Jio postpaid mobile plan - 150 GB/month Rs. 799."

He then listed the price of the other Indian amenities, "JioFiber Unlimited - 100 Mbps Rs. 899 + Rs. 162 GST, Netflix 4K Rs. 649, Urban Company Swedish Massage Rs. 1,249, Rs. 631 remaining for dinner."

The Twitter user furthers his analysis by mentioning how PPPs (public-private partnerships) are higher in western countries. He penned, "Also, PPP is higher in Canada, yes. It's very expensive to live there as a middle-class person though, especially in major cities like Vancouver where I'm from. Enjoying luxuries like a massage, ride-hailing, food delivery, unlimited data, etc. are less common."

The thread quickly caught wind on the internet as people flocked over to post and picked the poster's brain for more information. One user asked, "How many hours would you have to work to get this 85$ in Canada?" To this, the poster approximated, "At minimum wage, 5.5 hours."
