Mallya, previously known as the 'king of good times' due to his luxurious lifestyle, fled to the United Kingdom in 2016 after being accused of bank fraud involving Rs 90 billion in loans. The black cloud of problems surrounding Mallya began in 2012.
In 2017, the UK Metropolitan Police extradition squad detained the businessman on behalf of Indian authorities on fraud charges. He was eventually released on bond.
