A Cambridge University academic's account of escaping after being locked inside a medieval tower's bathroom has gone viral. She was reportedly confined in the location for seven hours and worried she would "stay there for days". She was able to escape by using eyeliner and a cotton swab.
Who escaped from a medieval tower bathroom using an eyeliner and a cotton swab?
Dr. Krisztina Ilko took to X to share her story.
"The plumber destroyed the bathroom lock without telling me. I went in and got locked up. The door is solid wood and will not break. I was stuck for 7 hours (I assumed I'd be there for days because no one could hear). Finally, I handpicked the lock with eyeliner and an earpick," she stated.
Where did she get her inspiration?
In another tweet, she humorously remarked, "Watching all those MacGyver episodes clearly paid off". MacGyver is an old television series about a secret agent.
Dr Ilko ended her message with a photo of herself. It shows her standing in front of the old restroom, holding the items she used to escape.
You may be wondering how she ended up in the bathroom of a medieval tower.
According to the BBC, she now lives in the former Queens' College rooms of a 16th-century philosopher. The tower features hefty wooden doors, thick walls, and a bathroom with no windows.
According to the publication, Dr Ilko anticipated that she will be in the bathroom for several days.
Why did she get stuck inside the medieval tower bathroom?
On Thursday, the door latched behind her, and cleaning was scheduled for Monday.
"If people came looking for me would they check the bathroom, or would I have to wait for Monday," she was quoted as saying by the BBC. "I tried to bang the shower head on the door, break it with brute force, and shout for help but nothing worked and no one could hear me," she said.
Initially, she attempted to break through the door, resulting in bruising on her shoulders.
"When I eventually got out and the door opened it was exhilarating because I didn't think it would work," she said in an interview with the BBC. "I expected to be there for five days or longer, but I made it out," she said. Since the event, the bathroom lock has been removed.
Note to self: always carry an eyeliner and an ear pick with you. Excellent job!
