New Study Says Women Prefer Funny Men And Think They Are More Intelligent

Men can truly make women laugh themselves to sleep with a good sense of humour. This makes them appear more intellectual and more likely to become high-earners. This is what a new study claims.

How was the study conducted?

In the study, 162 women were recruited for a speed-dating style experiment in which they were shown images of six guys. The men, similar in appearance, had been picked because women thought they were averagely handsome. Each man then delivered an 'icebreaker' comment, which may have been a humorous joke, an awful joke, or a bland statement about their favourite colour or pizza.

Women, on the other hand, were considerably more likely to indicate they would offer the man in the photos their phone number if they believed he had made a witty joke.

Unfortunately, the study indicated that unfunny guys were no more likely to receive a woman's phone number than those who made no attempt at humour. A follow-up investigation revealed why hilarious men are more likely to get the lady.

When 81 women were asked to rate images of eight men, half of whom had told a hilarious joke and the other half had made an unfunny joke, they rated the funny guys as smarter. They were also seen as having greater earning potential than unfunny males.

"Funny guys may appear more competent to women, as indicated by them thinking them to be more clever in their study," said Dr Mitch Brown, who conducted the study from the University of Arkansas.

"If women believe that, they may believe that men will accomplish better in their careers, know more people, understand how to play the game, and earn more money."

What observations did the study reveal?

According to the study, which was published in the journal Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences, men use comedy to convey to women that they are interested in them and to bond with them by laughing together.

Women appeared to appreciate men's attempts at comedy, even if they fell flat. The study found that women rated both witty and unfunny men equally well for friendliness.

The investigation with 162 women, on the other hand, discovered that females expected men to be more successful in acquiring a spouse if they were amusing. After seeing the images and the men's alleged words, women were asked to rate men's friendliness, the likelihood of dating success, and the likelihood of giving them their phone numbers.

Men cracking jokes run the risk of appearing warm, friendly, and like good boyfriend material, or of backfiring and making them appear untrustworthy show-offs interested in playing the field.

Researchers asked 108 women to judge guys with hilarious and unfunny statements on whether they would choose them for a long-term relationship to see which viewpoint they held.

Funny men were favoured for long-term partnerships, indicating that they were regarded as trustworthy and loyal partners. Women favoured them for short-term relationships as well, though with a smaller edge over unfunny males.

The 'funny' males in the study were given lines that women previously deemed hilarious, such as 'The past, present, and future were arguing. It was stressful.'

Another was, 'Cremation - my only hope for a smoking sexy body.' 'What do you call a tiger with glasses?' said one of the unfunny men. A tiger scientist.'

The women valued a good sense of humour, but good looks appeared to be crucial as well, as a group of 141 women assessed funny guys as even more desirable when their photograph was pretty rather than unattractive.
