Another Case Of Medical Apathy From Tamil Nadu, 2-YO Allegedly Transfused HIV Infected Blood

In another shocking case of medical apathy, parents of a 2-year-old said that their baby was transfused with HIV Aids infected blood. The incident took place at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where the baby was admitted for cardiac treatment.

The couple of Viswanathan (aged 28) and Chithra (aged 25) became parents to twins, girl and a boy March 2017 at Trichy Government Hospital. While the boy was healthy, the girl was weak and underweight. She was kept in the ICU for 32 days before being discharged.
After her father got a new job and moved to Thirupur, the baby girl fell sick again. The Mirror Now report states that the Thirupur hospital diagnosed her with a hole in the heart.
She was referred to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for further treatment. But soon after that, she fell sick again.
The doctors found several lumps in her body and tested her HIV positive. The father told the New Indian Express r that blood transfusion happened on July 12, 2018.
"The doctors stopped the transfusion midway, saying the blood had been collected from an ¡®old man¡¯ and was wrongly given to my child," the father was quoted as saying.
According to a Mirror Now report, the father filed a complaint and urged the police to take necessary action against the hospital authorities. This incident comes almost two months after a pregnant woman admitted at a government hospital in Sattur was transfused HIV positive blood.

A few days after being discharged, the baby fell sick again and upon medical examination he doctors found lumps in her body and was tested HIV positive.
Dr Ashokan - the dean of Coimbatore Government hospital told Mirror Now ¡°She was treated with blood. Her Haemoglobin was low and she was treated with blood components. 50ml was transfused and the component was checked and found negative for HIV, Malaria, Syphilis, Hep C and B. So this is not true that the transfusion caused HIV."
"Actually, we are sure that the blood transfusion didn¡¯t cause the infection. Maybe, the child was underweight and went through multiple hospitalisations in Trichy (Government hospital) for more than 6 weeks.¡±
