Boeing Dreamlifter! Scary Footage Shows The Moment 100 Kg Wheel Falls Off After Takeoff
A wheel fell off a giant Boeing Co. cargo jet and plunged to the ground shortly after the aircraft took off from Taranto in southern Italy.
While flying may be the easiest and fastest mode of transport, many are pretty scared of flying. So, imagine the wheels of your flight falling off right after you have taken off. Would be scary, right?
Wheels fall off Boeing 747 flight as soon as it takes off
Well, a Boeing 747-400 Dreamlifter lost one of its wheels just seconds after taking off. This plane was taking off from Taranto-Grottaglie Airport in southern Italy for Charleston, South Carolina when of the wheels fell off. Thankfully, this is not a passenger jet, but a cargo variant of which four were ever built.
This entire episode was captured on camera. The video shows the cargo plane accelerating on the tarmac. Just over 5 seconds after the take off one of the heavy 100kg wheels starts to smoke and eventually falls off.
The caption along with the video went like this, "A Boeing 747 Dreamlifter operated by Atlas Air (N718BA) that took off from Taranto (IT) to Charleston (USA) on Tuesday morning (11OCT22) lost a main landing gear wheel during take-off. The aircraft operates flight #5Y4231 and carries Dreamliner components." According to the page, the video was captured by La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno.

The fallen wheel of this plane was later found at a vineyard outside of the boundaries of the airport. Despite such a problem, the flight was able to land safely.
However, after the footage of the takeoff went viral, the flight became one of the most tracked flight in the world, with more than 10,000 users following its journey.

The cause of this incident has not yet been ascertained. However, a Boeing spokesperson said the company will support Atlas Air¡¯s investigation. Atlas Air didn't comment.
Fortunately, the Boeing 747-400 Dreamlifter is used to transport parts. The airplane took off for the first time in 2006. The flight was put in service to carry goods between Italy, the US and Japan. It was also used during the coronavirus pandemic to transport medical supplies.
