Floods due to heavy rains are causing havoc in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province in China. The province was the hardest hit after being drenched by what weather forecasters said was the heaviest rain in 1,000 years.
In Zhengzhou, a city of over 12 million on the banks of the Yellow River, 12 people have died so far amid the floods, and about 100,000 people have been evacuated to safe zones, the official Xinhua agency reported, citing the local government.
Millions of people in Henan have been upended since the weekend in an unusually active rainy season that has led to the rapid rise of a number of rivers in the vast Yellow River basin.
Amid these floods due to heavy rain, people were trapped in subways in waist-deep water and children in schools, vehicles were washed away and several others were stranded at their workplaces overnight, Associated Press reports.
All the roads have turned into rivers and subway stations and cars were inundated due to heavy rain. During this, Sinologist Manya Koetse posted a thread on Twitter featuring videos shared on Chinese social media about the floodings in Henan in order to elaborate on the ¡°severity of the situation.¡±
