Even though Diwali has passed, people are now involved in Chhath Puja celebrations. This important Hindu festival is celebrated mostly in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Delhi and Mumbai.
The four-day festival began on November 17 and will end on November 20. In the midst of the festivities, an unfortunate tragedy in Bihar has garnered significant attention.
What happened in Bihar?
A terrifying event stunned devotees gathering on the banks of the Gandak River in Gopalganj district. A massive crocodile can be seen strolling in the ocean in a recent video released on X (previously known as Twitter). The crocodile was spotted near the Dumaria Ghat, according to reports.
Why were the locals terrified?
The footage caused concern among devotees who planned to attend the riverbanks for Chhath Puja ceremonies.
Soon after, local authorities issued guidelines urging worshippers to be cautious and avoid the stretch when approaching close to the river's banks.
How have authorities reacted to it?
According to reports, the Gopalganj district administration has erected barricades along many ghats of the Gandak River to prevent visitors from entering deep water. They've also set up signs along the river warning tourists of the alleged presence of crocodiles.
Why is Chhath Puja celebrated?
Surya, the Sun God, is worshipped at Chhath Puja. The event is often held in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik, which corresponds to either October or November in the Gregorian calendar.
Devotees thank the Sun God and seek blessings for happiness, prosperity, and well-being at this puja. Nahay Khay, Lohanda and Kharna, Sandhya Arghya, and Usha Arghya are among the four-day festivals.
Nahay Khay entails bathing in the sacred river water. Fasting, special offerings, and performing the 'arghya' or offerings to the rising and setting sun are all part of the rites. During this time, devotees, particularly women, keep stringent fasts and worship the Sun God.
