Fugitive busted after applying for job at county sheriff's office
The vast majority of criminals make mistakes somewhere along the way. They either mess up their plan, leave clues for the police to find, or are spotted by witnesses who call the police.
But this particular fugitive was far more stupid than that. A wanted fugitive in the US was arrested she applied for a job at the Hudson County Sheriff¡¯s Office, the law enforcement agency that specialises in picking people wanted for outstanding warrants.
Zyeama Y. Johnson, 27, was arrested on October 4 after she applied for the wrong job.
"She applied for a job as a security guard. Obviously, as part of the background check process, we run them for warrants, a detective for the Hudson County Sheriff's Office told Newsweek.
Zyeama Y. Johnson has many warrants pending against her
As checks were carried out, it was found that
Zyeama had an active bench warrant in Pennsylvania's Monroe County for failure to appear in court on fraud charges, as well as 10 bench warrants in Jersey City, New Jersey, for failure to appear on traffic charges.
"At that point, we called her in for an interview¡ªor rather what she thought was an interview¡ªand we took her into custody," the sheriff's office spokesperson told the outlet.
While conducting a routine search of
Zyeama's property after her arrest, officers found two credit cards that they believed to be stolen, said a spokesperson. She was charged with credit card theft.
After further investigation, it was revealed that Zyeama is a former employee of the United States Postal Service. Detectives contacted the United States Postal Investigative Service, which has launched its own investigation.
Asked why
Zyeama
would have applied for a job and walked into her own arrest, the spokesperson said, "We don't know."
The alleged fugitive is currently being housed at the Hudson County Correctional Facility, pending her extradition to Pennsylvania.
In many US states, failure to appear in court is a misdemeanour, which can lead to consequences including a jail sentence, fines and driver's license suspension, according to legal publisher Nolo.
Bail jumping charges can apply when a defendant who is out on bail doesn't show up in court, while a person who fails to obey a court order can also be charged with contempt of court.
So, Zyeama is surely looking at a jail term for her wrongdoings.
