While there are a million things to be taken care of in terms of tackling crimes and being more effective as a police force, the UP cops are trying something new to deter crime - they're busy revamping the tune of their sirens.
It's not the regular one, they've taken it up a notch and added a nostalgic element to it.
The siren now blares 'Jaagte Raho' a slogan chanted by watchmen back in the day and probably even now in some places to keep thieves at bay.
"All Dial-100 Police Response Vehicles' (PRV) sirens will play tunes of 'Jagte Raho' (stay awake) in Lucknow," Hazratganj police officer Abhay Mishra said.
#WATCH Dial-100 Police Response Vehicle (PRV)'s siren plays tune of "Jagte Raho"(stay awake) in Lucknow. Abhay Mishra,Circle Officer,Hazratganj:The tune will be played in PRVs all night to alert the public, like watchmen used to do. "The tune will be played in PRVs all night to alert the public, like watchmen used to do. It has started in Hazratganj as a pilot project. Its success will be monitored and will be applied elsewhere in future," he said.
Police are trying this unique measure to curb the menace of criminals in the area, states ANI report.
Director General of Police O.P. Singh told HT ¡°We have controlled the crime graph to an appreciable extent. We are trying to cultivate a people-friendly image for the police force and are trying out new initiatives. This is one of them.¡±
But how can changing the tune of sirens from the regular one to that of Jaagte Raho, do anything at all? The move obviously left people pissed.
Many pointed how unnecessary such a step was and that it wasn't going to do anything more than disturb people's sleep.
One Twitter user wrote, 'Being alert is one thing. But asking people to be awake all night is running away from the responsibility of creating a safe environment in the cities so that public can sleep safely in their homes'.
@Uppolice what d heck is this.? U expect ppl to b alert at night Instead of ur cops.?

See the decibels of this siren against decibels of watchman shouting... @myogiadityanath do u feel proud of this initiative..?? Cheap though process n the initiative.@HMOIndia pls intervene
Another said, 'Wasteful endeavour, most of these PRV cops keep sitting gossiping playing cards for hours and in the meantime, some car theft occurs. They are there to keep an eye alert & vigilant but these guys are too much engrossed in other things. Compare the performance good for nothing'.
When it comes to weird antics, UP cops have already established a niche in the online space. Last year, a UP cop shot to popularity for shouting ¡°thain thain¡± to scare criminals during an encounter.
Sub-inspector Manoj Kumar of UP police was actually in pursuit of two armed men in Sambhal district then, but had found his progress hampered by a jammed pistol following which he made a 'thain-thain' sound.
