Man Orders Laptop During 'Big Billion Days' Sale On Flipkart, Gets Ghadi Detergent Instead
For an IIM-Ahemdabad graduate, his online sales experience with Flipkart has left a bitter aftertaste.
Festivals are joyous for people in India, and the last few months before the year ends bring a lot of reasons for people to rejoice. One of the reasons are back to back sales. Several online websites offer significant discounts, tapping into people's moods to purchase and buy things for themselves or others.
However, sometimes, people go through bizarre experiences with online sales.
For an IIM-Ahemdabad graduate, his online sales experience with Flipkart has left a bitter aftertaste.
Flipkart delivered packages of Ghadi detergent to Yashaswi Sharma's doorstep. He had ordered a laptop for his father. The purchase was made during the Big Billion Days deal. According to Yashaswi's social media post, the e-commerce giant has refused to rectify its mistake.
According to a LinkedIn post by Yashaswi Sharma, Flipkart's customer support is blaming him even though they sent Ghadi detergent sachets in place of a laptop. In addition, he alleged that he had CCTV footage to back up his claims, but it was futile.
Sharma claimed that his father's one "mistake" in accepting the package was not being aware of the idea of "open-box" delivery. To comply, the buyer must open the box before the delivery person and only provide the OTP after carefully inspecting the product.
Sharma claimed that his father believed the OTP would be given after receiving the parcel, as is customary among most pre-paid deliveries.
In an elaborate LinkedIn post, Sharma writes:
"I have CCTV proof of delivery boy coming and going without the box being inspected. And subsequently, the unboxing revealed no laptop inside,"
The senior-most customer service executive for Flipkart asserted that since the OTP was accepted, no refund was possible, and the situation could not escalate further.
Sharma added,
"My father's fault is that he assumed the package¡ªcoming from a Flipkart assured seller¡ªwould contain a laptop, not detergent. Why couldn't the delivery boy inform the receiver about the open box concept before asking for OTP?" he said.

Sharma claimed that he posted the complaint as a last desperate attempt to be addressed before heading to the consumer forum.
He also tagged Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy in his post, which is now viral.

(Update: In response to our story, Flipkart shared an update: "Flipkart, as a customer-focused organization, observes a zero-tolerance policy on all incidents that impact customer trust. It is of utmost importance to us to ensure the best possible online shopping experience for our customers. The customer shared the OTP with the delivery executive without opening the package in this case that offered an Open Box Delivery option. Once the incident details were verified, our customer service team initiated a refund that will be credited within 3-4working days. We have identified the issue and initiated action against the errant party. Flipkart's Open Box Delivery is an initiative dedicated to safeguarding the customer's interests. As part of the Open Box Delivery process, Flipkart Wishmasters (delivery partner) opens the product at the time of delivery in front of the customer. Customers need to accept the delivery only when their orders are present in an intact state and then share the OTP. This prevents any financial liability on the part of the customer. This is an extension of the various initiatives that Flipkart has undertaken over the years to improve the overall customer experience and build a superior supply chain."
