This Man Was Able To Shoplift In Broad Daylight & Get Away With It Thanks To A Law
A man shoplifts in broad daylight in the city of San Francisco. However people are divide if it will be considered a crime or not.
Imagine you're shopping at a grocery store and see a person taking things from the shelves and stuffing it inside his bag in broad daylight. You notice that everyone else can see this person stealing stuff from the shop openly as well but no one is doing anything.
Something like that happened at a Walgreens store in San Francisco where a local reporter captured a video of a young man in a black hooded jacket taking items from a shelf and shoving them into a black garbage bag.
He captured others taking a video of the guy as well. That also included the security guard who tried to stop the shoplifter. However, he didn't really get into a fight and let him go.

This entire video left the internet divided where people asked if they should have tried to stop the guy from stealing or not.
There was debate regarding the same due to a city law called Proposition 47, a controversial 2014 referendum that lowered the penalty for stealing goods worth less than $950 from a felony to a misdemeanor. This doesn't exactly make shoplifting a felony and it is punishable by probation, fines, restitution, and up to 6 months in jail.
People had a lot of comments about the security issue.
"Descended into lawlessness" is a strange phrase to be using about an American city, but it seems an accurate description of what's happening here.

As a Canadian watching this, my mind is blown. Is that what things have come to in SF?

How long before someone takes justice into their own hands?

Walgreens has closed 17 locations in the past five years and many elderly and disabled people are having a hard time getting their medicines.
Walgreens spokesman Phil Caruso said in a statement to CNN " Unfortunately, this is another example of blatant retail theft which is an ongoing problem for several retailers in San Francisco"
