Model Fined Rs 1.43 Lakh At Airport For Failing To Declare Her Subway Sandwich At Customs
The 19-year-old model uploaded a clip of her ordeal on social media, where it quickly went viral and garnered lakhs of views.
Travel makes us incredibly hungry, and frequent flyers would agree. Even the healthiest among us could experience severe hunger pangs after spending many hours in cars, trains, ferries, or flights. Thanks to fast-food restaurants and "to-go" options like Domino's or Subway, they make our lives easier.
Airports today are more than equipped with food options that make it easy for travelers to grab a bite while on the go.
But can you imagine paying a hefty Rs. 1.43 lakh for a subway sandwich?
A simple subway sandwich that could barely cost you more than Rs.250 ended up costing a bomb for an Australian Model.
At the Australian airport, customs officials issued a hefty fine to an Australian model named Jessica Lee after she failed to notify customs officials about two ingredients after arriving in Europe from her journey.
The 19-year-old model uploaded a clip of her ordeal on social media, where it quickly went viral and garnered thousands of views.
Jessica Lee, flying from Europe to Australia, stopped in Singapore for a layover following an 11-hour flight and grabbed a foot-long Subway sandwich.
"I ate six inches before my second flight and then saved the other six inches for the flight, which they're more than happy with," she said in the video she uploaded on TikTok.
However, Lee could not finish the Subway sandwich and failed to declare her lunch when she arrived at customs in Australia.
"I thought the little declaration thing you do is for your carry-ons and your luggage, so I didn't tick chicken, and I didn't tick lettuce," Lee said.
As a result, a $2,664 fine¡ªroughly Rs. 1.43 lakh¡ªhad to be paid in just 28 days. Jessica was also worried about how she would pay her rent and this hefty fine as she had recently lost her job.
"I know this is my mistake, and I take ownership; I am paying the fine. Don't copy my expensive mistakes," she concluded.
After Jessica's viral video, the internet is polarized. Reactions to the bizarre Subway sandwich story came in flood. Some people believed Jessica should have been aware of the laws in her own country, while others thought she should have received a warning before being punished with an enormous fine.
Another internet user described how they immigrated from Sydney to Adelaide with just a handful of grapes and were still issued a $400 fine.
