A snorkeller in Florida stumbled upon $1.5 million worth of cocaine while swimming off the coast of the Florida Keys and turned it in to authorities, local police have revealed.
A snorkeller in Florida stumbled upon $1.5 million worth of cocaine while swimming off the coast of the Florida Keys and turned it in to authorities, local police have revealed.
The Monroe County Sheriff¡¯s Office said in a statement on Thursday that the snorkeler noticed a large bale floating on the water near near Craig Key, an island city in the middle Florida Keys, and contacted local authorities.

Once the office was alerted to the find, they soon notified the US Border Patrol who responded and found the large black bundle wrapped up in tape containing 25 bricks of cocaine weighing 68 pounds, New York Daily News reported.
According to the sheriff¡¯s office, US Border Patrol valued the drugs at more than $1.5 million.

While the size of the find appeared shocking, it seems that the waters are no stranger to such discoveries, with local authorities and news outlets often reporting similar incidents involving cocaine bundles.
Two months ago, a similar episode made the headlines after a fisherman found more than a dozen cocaine packages floating in another part of the Florida Keys. The drugs, worth about $1.2 million, were found south of Sugarloaf Key in late December, local news station WPLG reported.

In 2017, a nearly 50-pound bale of cocaine turned up on the shore near Melbourne Beach, on Central Florida¡¯s Space Coast.
Another random discovery of the drug was found in 2019. Bricks of cocaine were discovered by police at two beaches in Florida.
