The Great Pyramids Of Giza are the oldest in the list of Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The pyramid were built for the Fourth Dynasty Pharaoh Khufu (or Cheops), and was completed around 2560 BC.
Most historians believe that this colossal structure was constructed over a period of more than 20 years and Pharaoh Khufu was buried in a tomb inside. But many historians have been puzzled over how an ancient civilisation in around 2500 BC managed to transport raw material for the pyramid that has more than six million tonnes of stone blocks.
However, this question has finally been answered! It was revealed during Channel 4¡¯s ¡®Egypt Great Pyramid: The New Evidence¡¯ how archaeologists are starting to learn more about this civilisation.
The documentary revealed, 'Sourcing the 170,000 tonnes of high-quality limestone to encase the pyramid was Khufu¡¯s biggest challenge. This could only be mined from faraway quarries, at a place called Tora. Nobody has ever been completely sure how so much stone was brought to Giza to complete the build in just over a quarter of a century. But now new evidence is revealing that Khufu may have only managed this with a fleet of specially built boats and highly trained sailors.¡¯
The series also explained about how a team of archaeologists were able to get a better understanding of a discovery that was first made in 1954. An Egyptian team discovered a number of wooden beams that were carefully removed, in a pit near the base of the pyramid.
And thanks to the technology advancement, now we know that the beams were made up of the remains of a dismantled boat.
The documentary also explained ¡®Today, at the foot of the pyramid, a unique find is shining light on this theory. These pieces of wood are actually a dismantled boat ¨C a ceremonial ship that Khufu would command in the afterlife. It gives a unique insight into the vessels used at the time.¡¯
Eissa Zidan, who oversaw this project also believes that the boat may have belonged to the great Pharaoh himself. He said ¡°This is a number one project, not only in Egypt but all over the world. According to our analysis, this is the result from 2600 BC.¡±
He added ¡°This is the same period as Khufu¡¯s pyramids, so we know this is the boat of King Khufu.I was very happy because I was the first man to touch this wood in more than 4,000 years.¡±
In a similar incident, another group of archaeologists discovered a secret 2000-year-old underground room decorated with colourful animal frescoes while attempting to restore Emperor Nero¡¯s palace in Rome.
The walls of the chamber in the Domus Aurea - the Golden House - was found with the depiction of panthers, centaurs and a sphinx. It's called the Sphinx Room. Alfonsina Russo, the head of the Colosseum archaeological park in which the Golden House is, said it was ¡°an exceptional and thrilling find¡±.
