Extreme Weather Pushes US Hospital To The Brink, Trash Bags Being Used To Clean Toilets

Hospitals are supposed to have immaculate facilities to house the sick patients, but the exact opposite seems to be happening at this Texas hospital.

According to local reports, hospitals were evacuated after patients were left without water or power due to the winter storm that continues to leave the power grid crippled. Another storm will reportedly roll through as well.

St. David's South Austin Medical Center and Dell Children's Medical Center, both in Austin, Texas, are transferring patients to other hospitals, according to local news reports.

The ongoing storm coupled with power outages and water failures have forced hospitals not to accept all of the patients that need to be transferred, according to David Huffstutler, the CEO of St. David's HealthCare, KUT reported.

Many other hospitals are also facing the failure of basic services due to the storm and some even had to transport human waste in the trash bags because of the lack of water, KVUE reported.

A nurse on duty said that notice listed instructions for using the restroom during the water outage, including not to put toilet paper in the toilet after urination and a specific procedure to handle excrement.

Seven million Texans are also under boil water notices after the deadly storm compromised water filtration systems there - a problem exacerbated by the lack of power in many homes.

According to the BBC, people in Texas have been told to boil tap water before consuming it after a deadly winter storm caused power blackouts at treatment facilities.

Freezing temperatures have also caused water pipes to burst, despite attempts by some homeowners to insulate them from the cold using blankets.

Another blast of ice and snow forecast Wednesday threatened to sow more chaos, with more than 3 million people reported being still without power.

The San-Antonio Express-News reported that the power outages in the area had upended health care services, with some hospitals forced to rely on backup generators for power. Calls for emergency service to the San Antonio Fire Department and ambulance services in the area had dramatically increased since the storm, according to the newspaper.

An Insider report states that 31 people across the country have died since the frigid weather began last week. As state leaders continue to call for conservation efforts, more than 100 million Americans remain under some type of winter-weather warning.
