A Papua Police spokesperson said action had been taken against the officials. However, he justified the use of the reptile during the interrogation.
In a statement, Jayawijaya police chief Tonny Ananda Swadaya issued an apology, saying, "The investigator was not professional in doing his job". Swadaya added that the officers had been acting on their own initiative to try to get a confession, saying the snake was non-venomous and tame.
"Inhumane treatment against West Papuans is regularly reported. The culture of impunity there makes West Papuans just let it go and not pursue further," Veronica Koman, Human Rights lawyer, told Efe. The use of snakes in interrogation has been reported on previous occasions in Papua and West Papua, said Koman.
