In a stomach-churning incident, a vegan activist campaign group named 'Meat The Victims' caught pigs eating each other alive at a farm in Northern Ireland.
The animal-rights activists filmed cannibalism, bodies left on the floor, and pigs covered in dirt in crowded pens at the farm which was certified for its 'high standards'.
Viewers Discretion Advised
The Metro UK quoted one of the activists as saying, 'this farm has some of the worst neglect and abuse I have ever witnessed in my life'. Many of the pigs have gaping wounds on their hind legs which was being 'slowly gnawed by other animals in the pen'.
Goti, one activist, said the experience was ¡°absolutely harrowing¡±. She told Metro.co.uk: ¡°One of the pigs actually had a hole in both of her sides and she was being cannibalised.
¡°They were eating her while she was alive. She didn¡¯t even have the strength to scream. She was just softly whimpering and there was nothing we could do but watch that.¡±
The farm has since been shut down after the footage did the rounds online. An organisation called Red Tractor which deemed the farm to be 'safe and well maintained' has since retracted the claim.
The Metro UK quoted the Red Tractor as saying "We were absolutely shocked by the images we saw, protecting animal health and welfare is one of our top priorities and we take any breaches to our Standards very seriously."
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) in Northern Ireland confirmed that it is investigating the footage.
