Watch: Stressed or tense? Just pull your tongue in all directions, says US Olympian who swears by it
In a viral video, Olympian Colleen Quigley shares her quirky method to relieve stress¡ªby pulling on her tongue to release jaw tension. Though it looks bizarre, Quigley swears it works, and even experts back her up on the surprising connection between jaw and pelvic floor relaxation.
In a viral video making the rounds on social media, Olympian Colleen Quigley is sharing some unconventional advice on how to calm your nerves when you're feeling stressed. As an elite athlete, you'd expect her tips to be gold, but what she swears by might leave you scratching your head¡ªshe literally takes out her tongue and gives it a pull! And she insists it works.
Check out her video:
Quigley starts her video with a warning for what's to come: "Okay this is by far the weirdest thing that I do as part of my warmup."
Then, things get... interesting. She grabs her tank top, pulls it out, and uses it to tug on her tongue. Yes, you read that right.
"You grab your tongue, pull it out and just kinda like pull it in different directions and hold it side to side and up and down," she says, demonstrating the odd technique.
According to her, this bizarre move helps release tension in your jaw¡ªapparently linked to your pelvis through something called a 'facial sling.'
While she admits it looks ridiculous and might make you drool, she insists it works wonders for relaxation.
"Just try to relax into it," she advises.
Supporting her claims, pelvic floor therapist Cate Schaffer explained to Well+Good that tension in the jaw can actually affect your pelvic floor, leading to coordination issues and even pain.
For the brave souls willing to try this tongue-pulling hack, Schaffer suggests starting with one to two minutes of pulling, followed by gentle cheek and jaw massages to ease the tension.
But, of course, before diving into any internet advice, it's always smart to check with your doctor!
