Woman Sues Fertility Clinic After She Had IVF For A Baby Girl But Gave Birth To A Boy
Heather Wilhelm-Routenberg and her wife Robin wanted to have a child and chose gender selection during the IVF process to ensure they had a girl - but they didn't quite get what they'd bargained for
A couple has resorted to suing a fertility clinic in New York after they had IVF for a baby girl but welcomed a boy.
The couple including Heather Wilhelm-Routenberg and her wife Robin (Robbie) found a fertility clinic in New York to have embryos implanted and they specifically did so, so they can ensure they have a girl.
The couple spoke to New York Post about it. They said, they chose Robbie's eggs and a donor's sperm to create an embryo that was implanted in Heather's womb.
After growing attached and thinking they'd have a girl, they had a major shock in the 15th-week scan. The sonographer told them that they are having a boy.
¡°Our jaws dropped to the floor. I was convinced it had to be someone else¡¯s result," Heather said.
The couple was convinced that it wasn't their own baby. They thought of it as an alien inside the body. After 7 weeks of process and investigation, they came to know that the baby is their own only. However, the couple had no connection to the baby and felt betrayed.
Heather said: "We had a healthy baby, but I had no emotional connection and now I had to wrap my head around having a child forever that I wasn¡¯t planning on."
The couple was so adamant about not having a boy because Heather was 'afraid of hospitals' and had experienced 'a lot of physical pain during medical procedures on [her] reproductive region'.
This was distressing for the couple.
