'Dilli Ki Dhoop, Chawal': Zara Fails To Desi-Fy Its Clothing With Bizarre T-Shirt Slogans
Zara pulled the ultimate faux pas by adding random and bizarre slogans to their clothing. Users on Twitter are scratching their heads as images of the clothes go viral.
It is inevitable that the desi context of jokes and slang gets lost in translation, but how hard can it be to not use rice, aka "Chawal," as a slogan on a shirt? Well, apparently the task is harder than it sounds. A shirt by Zara has been making the rounds on the Internet for butchering desi sentiment.
Zara Clothes With Bizarre Hindi Slogans Get Bashed Online
In the image going viral, a white shirt by the fashion brand Zara left people scratching their heads. A user pointed out how the brand had used some bizarre Hindi slogans on the shirt to give it an ethnic flare. The Hindi words written on the white shirt glared in black and red as they read, "Dilli Ki Dhoop Dilli," "Chawal," which literally translates to "Delhi¡¯s Sun Delhi," and "Rice."
Although both Delhi¡¯s scorching sun and the Asian rice have famous ties with India, the slogans on the shirt hardly made any sense as a statement. Twitter user Sheel Mohnot called out the company and wrote in his viral tweet, "Wtf is this @ZARA Translation: Left side: Delhi¡¯s Sun Delhi. Right side: Rice."
Wtf is this @ZARA

What was more mind-boggling was that beneath the red-threaded ¡°Chawal¡± was something written in English. It said, ¡°The elements of voyage,¡± which made the people on Twitter even more confused about the thought behind the shirt.
