CEO Takes Employees To Disney After Saving Rs 74 Lakh Through Work From Home
The office of PR firm Carve Communications was less than a year old when it permanently closed its doors and decided to work remotely. And that is what became a catalyst for the company's growth.
Founder and CEO David Barkoe was pleased that, in the summer of 2019, he was able to finally invest in a dedicated office for the nine employees of his Miami-based PR firm, as his team outgrew a number of co-working spaces. The new workspace featured floor to ceiling windows, newly designed desks, and an entrance mural created especially for the company by a local artist.
But like a lot of other businesses, Carve abruptly switched to remote work in March 2020.
A few months into the Covid-19 pandemic, the CEO experienced a number of key realizations: As the team expanded, CEO Barkoe could now hire talent from almost anywhere; the team was performing at least as well as when they were in the office; and the company was paying about $7,000 a month for a 12-month lease on space that might or might not be used.
Carve then moved out. But first, the business and their landlord worked out a deal that allowed them to break the lease early without incurring any penalties if a new tenant could be found before it expired. In the end, Carve left a few months early.
Barkoe claims that the choice paid off because Carve's revenue has increased by more than 20% year over year and it currently employs 20 people. By saving about $90,000 (approx Rs 74 lakh) from remote work, CEO Barkoe took his team to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, with a quick pit-stop in Disney Springs for sushi and bottles of sake in December 2023. "It didn't even feel like co-workers," says Aixa Bellido de Luna, an account supervisor, client and creator relations, at Carve. "It felt like we were just finally kicking back after really working hard all year long."

CEO Barkoe's choice to give up the office isn't as common as you might think; according to a recent survey, only 7% of businesses had a fully remote model; the majority chose hybrid or other flexible arrangements. Barkoe says that by eliminating the need for an office, Carve has been able to start holding twice-yearly team outings, one in the spring and one in the spring, when the team travels to Austin, Miami, or the Florida Keys for work and play.
"It just lets people connect in a new way, create new relationships," CEO Barkoe said.
