Meta Chief Mark Zuckerberg Loses Almost 3 Billion Dollars In One Day
Following a global outage that impacted Meta's flagship platforms Facebook and Instagram, CEO Mark Zuckerberg incurred a loss of nearly $3 billion(Rs 24,871 crore approx) in a single day.
In a single day, Mark Zuckerberg's net worth experienced a decrease of $2.79 billion, reaching $176 billion on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Despite this decline, he retained his position as the fourth-richest person globally. The dip in Meta shares by 1.6 percent following the global outage contributed to the erosion in Zuckerberg's net worth. The closing price for Meta shares in the overnight trading session on Wall Street was $490.22 each.
What Was The Reason Behind Instagram And Facebook¡¯s Global Outage?
The technical issue which spanned over 2 hours, began at 8:30PM. Reports started flooding on Meta¡¯s rival social media platform X.
The National Security Council at the White House has confirmed that it is actively observing the situation and has provided assurance that there is no evidence of any particular malicious cyber activity at the present moment.
During the peak of the outage, Downdetector.com reported more than 550,000 incidents of disruptions for Facebook and approximately 92,000 for Instagram.
Meta, with a daily active user base of around 3.19 billion across platforms like WhatsApp and Threads, experienced issues according to its status dashboard. The disruptions also extended to the WhatsApp Business application programming interface (API).
Nevertheless, Downdetector's data, which compiles outage reports from diverse sources, indicated that the impact on WhatsApp and Threads was relatively minor compared to other platforms during the outage.
On the anonymous messaging app Blind, concerns emerged among Meta employees, with some reporting challenges in logging into internal work systems. Speculation about potential lay-offs was also voiced within the discussion.
