Govt Is Mulling Over The Idea Of Making Common Medicines Available In General Stores
According to a TOI report, The government is considering the possibility of making common medicines available in general stores. The initiative has gained momentum with the formation of a committee to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages and make recommendations. The committee's primary objective is to develop an over-the-counter (OTC) drug policy for India, focusing particularly on rural areas where access to medicines is limited.

"Many countries, like the US, allow sale of commonly used medicines in grocery stores also. A suggestion was made by some of the experts looking into India's OTC drug policy to allow the same here also for improved accessibility, especially in the rural areas. However, no decision has been taken yet," Times of India quoted a source as saying.
The panel has reportedly compiled a list of medicines and conducted a recent meeting to review it and assess if any modifications are necessary.

Over-the-counter (OTC) medicine, also referred to as nonprescription medicine, is accessible for purchase without a prescription. These medications are considered safe and effective when used according to the instructions on the label and as advised by your healthcare provider.
