No Relief For Twitter Employees As Elon Musk Lays Off Another 10% Staff For Further Cost Cutting

There seems to be absolutely no relief for Twitter¡¯s remaining employees under Elon Musk.

After already laying off around 60% of the workforce since the $44 billion takeover, Elon Musk has conducted another round of layoffs.

Twitter Lays Off 200 Employees

Twitter has laid off at least 200 employees or about 10% of its workforce over the weekend, New York Times reported. The company has a head count of about 2,300 active employees, according to Elon Musk last month. Some employees learned they were laid off via an email, and others tweeted that they learned they were terminated when they could no longer log in to the internal system.

The layoffs were done on Saturday night, and impacted product managers, data scientists and engineers who worked on machine learning and site reliability, which helps keep Twitter's various features online, the NYT report said.

Among those laid off this time is Esther Crawford who had gone viral for sleeping on the Twitter office floor to meet a deadline after Musk's takeover in late October. The viral photo symbolised Musk's "extremely hardcore" work style for Twitter employees to meet deadlines.

She tweeted today confirming her layoff.

Twitter Shuts Its Internal Communication System

Twitter has apparently shut off its internal communication system Slack and employees posted on the anonymous workplace chat app Blind that the company had stopped paying its Slack bills, as per ET.

The move to shut Slack has left Twitter employees baffled and no one worked throughout last Friday as they were suddenly unable to communicate.

Mass Layoffs Since Elon Musk's Takeover

The latest job cuts follow a mass layoff in early November, when Twitter laid off about 3,700 employees in a cost-cutting measure by Musk, including ex-CEO Parag Agrawal. The job cuts did not end with the first round of mass layoffs, as Twitter has roughly laid off around 1000 more employees in the past five months.

Twitter CEO Elon Musk had said in November that the service was experiencing a "massive drop in revenue" as advertisers pulled spending amid concerns about content moderation, as per Reuters.

Recently, Twitter auctioned off many office items such as furniture, coffee machines, computers etc, and has started sharing revenue from advertisements with some of its content creators. Only earlier this month, Musk shared what the journey had been like so far.

He called the past three months "extremely tough" as he "had to save Twitter from bankruptcy" while also fulfilling his duties at Tesla and SpaceX.

The billionaire said "Last 3 months were extremely tough, as had to save Twitter from bankruptcy while fulfilling essential Tesla & SpaceX duties. Wouldn't wish that pain on anyone. Twitter still has challenges, but is now trending to breakeven if we keep at it. Public support is much appreciated!"
